February 26 - Evening

"It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."
- Deuteronomy 9:5

The Sin of the Amorites Has Become Wickedness

A very important and relevant principle is brought into focus in Deuteronomy 9:5. The Lord does not overthrow one nation because he finds another great people or righteous culture that needs land. No, nations are overthrown “on account of the wickedness of these nations.” (Dt. 9:5)
Please note: The Lord makes it clear that the Canaanites were not being driven out because of God’s covenant with Abraham nor because this generation of Israelites where such wonderful people. No, the Canaanites are being driven out because of their own wickedness. And, because of their wickedness God will use this opportunity “to accomplish what he swore to…Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.” (Dt. 9:5)
God had actually made Abraham and his family wait 600 years for the land since the Lord said in Genesis 15:13-18:
“In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.” – Genesis 15:16

In Deuteronomy 9:5 the sin of the Amorites had reached its full measure, plus forty extra years due to Israel’s rebellion. It is time for the Amorites/Canaanites to be destroyed in their fourth generation of rebellion. God will bring the fifth cycle of discipline on Canaan with the invasion of Israel and at the same time fulfill his promise to give the Land of Canaan to Abraham and his descendants.
An inscription recording the Gymnasiarchal Law of Beroea helps set the ages for children referred to by several different Greek words. When these words are used it is sometimes hard to determine the age of the child being referred to. This inscription helps since it refers to child using these words and these ages:
Paides are children up to age 15
Epheboi are children ages 15-17
Veaviskoi or neoi are 18-20 years old
Do I live righteously in such I way that it can be said that there is still righteousness in our land?
I will do what is right and justice in the eyes of God and man in order to please the Lord today.

Genesis 15:13-18
New International Version (NIV)
13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. 15 You, however, will go to your ancestors in peace and be buried at a good old age. 16 In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.”
17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram and said, “To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates—
Numbers 24
New International Version (NIV)
24 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not resort to divination as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness. When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him and he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,     the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,     who sees a vision from the Almighty,     who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:

“How beautiful are your tents, Jacob,     your dwelling places, Israel!

“Like valleys they spread out,     like gardens beside a river, like aloes planted by the Lord,     like cedars beside the waters.

Water will flow from their buckets;     their seed will have abundant water.
“Their king will be greater than Agag;
    their kingdom will be exalted.

“God brought them out of Egypt;     they have the strength of a wild ox. They devour hostile nations     and break their bones in pieces;     with their arrows they pierce them.

Like a lion they crouch and lie down,     like a lioness—who dares to rouse them?
“May those who bless you be blessed
and those who curse you be cursed!”
10 Then Balak’s anger burned against Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies, but you have blessed them these three times. 11 Now leave at once and go home! I said I would reward you handsomely, but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”
12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me, 13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord—and I must say only what the Lord says’? 14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”
Balaam’s Fourth Message
15 Then he spoke his message:
“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,     the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16
the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,     who has knowledge from the Most High, who sees a vision from the Almighty,     who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
17
“I see him, but not now;     I behold him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob;     a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab,     the skulls of all the people of Sheth.
18
Edom will be conquered;     Seir, his enemy, will be conquered,     but Israel will grow strong.
19
A ruler will come out of Jacob     and destroy the survivors of the city.”
Balaam’s Fifth Message
20 Then Balaam saw Amalek and spoke his message:
“Amalek was first among the nations,     but their end will be utter destruction.”
Balaam’s Sixth Message
21 Then he saw the Kenites and spoke his message:
“Your dwelling place is secure,     your nest is set in a rock;
22
yet you Kenites will be destroyed     when Ashur takes you captive.”
Balaam’s Seventh Message
23 Then he spoke his message:
“Alas! Who can live when God does this?
24
Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus; they will subdue Ashur and Eber,     but they too will come to ruin.”
25 Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
