July 16 - Evening

"Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.

This too is meaningless.

As goods increase, so do those who consume them. And what benefit are they to the owners except to feast their eyes on them?

The sleep of a laborer is sweet, whether they eat little or much, but as for the rich, their abundance permits them no sleep."

- Ecclesiastes 5:10-12

Problems Come With "Success"

Problem #1: If your goal is possessions, you are never satisfied. If you are rich then your life is probably focused on getting richer. That doesn’t mean poor people are immune to this problem. It is not a matter of rich or poor. This means if your goal is to get money you will never reach a point of satisfaction. You will always strive for your next pay raise or switch jobs for an increase in pay. The "good job" will always be the highest paying job. Basic principle: You cannot be satisfied with money.

“This too is meaningless.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10

You will have to learn to be content with your pay and your possessions as Paul did. Paul discussed this in Philippians 4:11-12,

“I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances… I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.”Philippians 4:11-12

It is important to learn to be content, so you can begin to strive in life for something greater than possessions. Paul did this and addressed it in Philippians 3:12-14:

“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.” Philippians 3:12

Problem #2: The more you grow the more you spend. If your pay check increases, so does the amount you spend. If your business grows you have to hire help. Bigger is not always better. And, more cash flow is not always more wealth. Business growth is proportionate to the number of people who get a cut of the profits. More profit usually equal a bigger payroll. So, the question could be asked:

“And what benefit are they to the owners.” – Ecclesiastes 5:11

Problem #3: More stuff results in more worry about potential loss. The greater your investments the more concern over possible mistakes and bad decisions. Solomon knew these feelings. Solomon watched his laborers building his buildings, managing his investments and overseeing his business affairs. Solomon summed up the difference between himself and his laborers in a simple comparison. The difference was clearly seen in the amount and the quality of sleep. Solomon was wealthier in possessions, but the laborer had a higher quality of life!

Kephalaion (Gr) – point (Eng) – the Greek word kephalaion comes from the adjective kephalaios which means “of the head. In Acts 22:28 kephalaion means “the sum of money.” In Hebrews 8:1 kephalaion means “the main point.”
I will not allow the drive for possessions, money or worldly success to ruin my quality of life or distract me from what God has called me to do.

622-750 AD    Muslim Expansion

Muslims conquered the Middle East in three waves of military expansion:

1. 622-632 under Muhammad they took the Arabian Peninsula.

2. 632-661 they took part of North Africa and the Sasanian (Iranian) Empire (the old Babylonian Empire). Jerusalem, Antioch and Alexandria were taken from the Christians. The building of the Dome of the Rock on the temple mound in Jerusalem began.

3. 661-750 Muslims took the rest of North Africa, and cross the Strait of Gilbraltar to take Gaul (Spain) in 711. The Muslim Empire extended from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean in North Africa to the borders of modern Pakistan.

16 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, confront Jerusalem with her detestable practices and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Jerusalem: Your ancestry and birth were in the land of the Canaanites; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. On the day you were born your cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water to make you clean, nor were you rubbed with salt or wrapped in cloths. No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough to do any of these things for you. Rather, you were thrown out into the open field, for on the day you were born you were despised.
“‘Then I passed by and saw you kicking about in your blood, and as you lay there in your blood I said to you, “Live!” I made you grow like a plant of the field. You grew and developed and entered puberty. Your breasts had formed and your hair had grown, yet you were stark naked.
“‘Later I passed by, and when I looked at you and saw that you were old enough for love, I spread the corner of my garment over you and covered your naked body. I gave you my solemn oath and entered into a covenant with you, declares the Sovereign Lord, and you became mine.

15 “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by and your beauty became his. 16 You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places, where you carried on your prostitution. You went to him, and he possessed your beauty. 17 You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them. 18 And you took your embroidered clothes to put on them, and you offered my oil and incense before them. 19 Also the food I provided for you—the flour, olive oil and honey I gave you to eat—you offered as fragrant incense before them. That is what happened, declares the Sovereign Lord.
20 “‘And you took your sons and daughters whom you bore to me and sacrificed them as food to the idols. Was your prostitution not enough? 21 You slaughtered my children and sacrificed them to the idols. 22 In all your detestable practices and your prostitution you did not remember the days of your youth, when you were naked and bare, kicking about in your blood.
23 “‘Woe! Woe to you, declares the Sovereign Lord. 32 “‘You adulterous wife! You prefer strangers to your own husband! 33 All prostitutes receive gifts, but you give gifts to all your lovers, bribing them to come to you from everywhere for your illicit favors. 34 So in your prostitution you are the opposite of others; no one runs after you for your favors. You are the very opposite, for you give payment and none is given to you.
35 “‘Therefore, you prostitute, hear the word of the Lord! 36 This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because you poured out your lust and exposed your naked body in your promiscuity with your lovers, and because of all your detestable idols, and because you gave them your children’s blood, 37 therefore I am going to gather all your lovers, with whom you found pleasure, those you loved as well as those you hated. I will gather them against you from all around and will strip you in front of them, and they will see you stark naked. 38 I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and who shed blood; I will bring on you the blood vengeance of my wrath and jealous anger. 39 Then I will deliver you into the hands of your lovers, and they will tear down your mounds and destroy your lofty shrines. I will give them to you as daughters, but not on the basis of my covenant with you. 62 So I will establish my covenant with you, and you will know that I am the Lord. 63 Then, when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign Lord.’”

A Prophecy Against Moab
15 A prophecy against Moab:
Ar in Moab is ruined,     destroyed in a night! Kir in Moab is ruined,     destroyed in a night!

Dibon goes up to its temple,     to its high places to weep;     Moab wails over Nebo and Medeba. Every head is shaved     and every beard cut off.

In the streets they wear sackcloth;     on the roofs and in the public squares they all wail,     prostrate with weeping.

Heshbon and Elealeh cry out,     their voices are heard all the way to Jahaz. Therefore the armed men of Moab cry out,     and their hearts are faint.

My heart cries out over Moab;     her fugitives flee as far as Zoar,     as far as Eglath Shelishiyah. They go up the hill to Luhith,     weeping as they go; on the road to Horonaim     they lament their destruction.

The waters of Nimrim are dried up     and the grass is withered; the vegetation is gone     and nothing green is left.

So the wealth they have acquired and stored up     they carry away over the Ravine of the Poplars.

Their outcry echoes along the border of Moab;     their wailing reaches as far as Eglaim,     their lamentation as far as Beer Elim.

The waters of Dimon are full of blood,     but I will bring still more upon Dimon— a lion upon the fugitives of Moab     and upon those who remain in the land.
Send lambs as tribute     to the ruler of the land, from Sela, across the desert,     to the mount of Daughter Zion.

Like fluttering birds     pushed from the nest, so are the women of Moab     at the fords of the Arnon.

“Make up your mind,” Moab says.     “Render a decision. Make your shadow like night—     at high noon. Hide the fugitives,     do not betray the refugees.

Let the Moabite fugitives stay with you;     be their shelter from the destroyer.”
The oppressor will come to an end,
    and destruction will cease;     the aggressor will vanish from the land.

In love a throne will be established;     in faithfulness a man will sit on it—     one from the house of David— one who in judging seeks justice     and speeds the cause of righteousness.

We have heard of Moab’s pride—     how great is her arrogance!— of her conceit, her pride and her insolence;     but her boasts are empty.

Therefore the Moabites wail,     they wail together for Moab. Lament and grieve     for the raisin cakes of Kir Hareseth.

The fields of Heshbon wither,     the vines of Sibmah also. The rulers of the nations     have trampled down the choicest vines, which once reached Jazer     and spread toward the desert. Their shoots spread out     and went as far as the sea.

So I weep, as Jazer weeps,     for the vines of Sibmah. Heshbon and Elealeh,     I drench you with tears! The shouts of joy over your ripened fruit     and over your harvests have been stilled.
Joy and gladness are taken away from the orchards;     no one sings or shouts in the vineyards; no one treads out wine at the presses,     for I have put an end to the shouting.
My heart laments for Moab like a harp,     my inmost being for Kir Hareseth.
When Moab appears at her high place,     she only wears herself out; when she goes to her shrine to pray,     it is to no avail.
13 This is the word the Lord has already spoken concerning Moab. 14 But now the Lord says: “Within three years, as a servant bound by contract would count them, Moab’s splendor and all her many people will be despised, and her survivors will be very few and feeble.”
A Prophecy Against Damascus
17 A prophecy against Damascus:
“See, Damascus will no longer be a city     but will become a heap of ruins.

The cities of Aroer will be deserted     and left to flocks, which will lie down,     with no one to make them afraid.

The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim,     and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be     like the glory of the Israelites,” declares the Lord Almighty.

“In that day the glory of Jacob will fade;     the fat of his body will waste away.

It will be as when reapers harvest the standing grain,     gathering the grain in their arms— as when someone gleans heads of grain     in the Valley of Rephaim.

Yet some gleanings will remain,     as when an olive tree is beaten, leaving two or three olives on the topmost branches,     four or five on the fruitful boughs,” declares the Lord, the God of Israel.

In that day people will look to their Maker     and turn their eyes to the Holy One of Israel.

They will not look to the altars,     the work of their hands, and they will have no regard for the Asherah poles     and the incense altars their fingers have made.
In that day their strong cities, which they left because of the Israelites, will be like places abandoned to thickets and undergrowth. And all will be desolation.
You have forgotten God your Savior;     you have not remembered the Rock, your fortress. Therefore, though you set out the finest plants     and plant imported vines,
though on the day you set them out, you make them grow,     and on the morning when you plant them, you bring them to bud, yet the harvest will be as nothing     in the day of disease and incurable pain.
Woe to the many nations that rage—     they rage like the raging sea! Woe to the peoples who roar—     they roar like the roaring of great waters!
Although the peoples roar like the roar of surging waters,     when he rebukes them they flee far away, driven before the wind like chaff on the hills,     like tumbleweed before a gale.
In the evening, sudden terror!     Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us,     the lot of those who plunder us.
